Detective Inspector (D.I.) Alex Drake knew Sam Tyler in 2008. In the opening scenes of episode one we learn she has been studying his case-file, knows his story, and even quotes Sam's familiar episode-opening sentences about waking up in 1973.

I won't spoil the whole story for people who haven't seen the episode yet, but after being shot in 2008, she 'wakes-up' in the middle of an undercover operation in 1981, finds herself in danger and is rescued by Gene Hunt, Ray Carling and Chris Skelton.

She recognizes and knows all of them, and refuses to believe this is 'real', assuming that she is in some sort of coma back in 2008 and is inventing the world she finds herself in and populating it with people she was reading about before her incident.

In the opening episode she comes across the same person that shot her. In 2008 he had mentioned that he knew her way back, and knew why her parents had died. The death, by car-bomb, of her parents had happened in 1981, so looks like another mystery to run throughout the series.

Every now and then a mysterious clown appears,  dressed exactly the same as the clown featured in the early eighties video for David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes".

There was some fantastic music played in the first episode. Ultravox's "Vienna", The Passions' "I'm In Love With a German Film Star" being the standout tracks. All in all, a GREAT episode for this Englishman in L.A. who has been waiting a long time to see this much talked about series!
